Roy's Steak & Subs

Overview

Walking into Roy's Steak & Subs at 2279 Savannah St SE, Washington, DC, you immediately feel the energy of a true neighborhood spot. The place isn’t trying to be flashy, but that’s what makes it stand out. Locals know it as the kind of diner where the grill sizzles all day, the subs come packed with generous fillings, and the staff call you by name after a few visits. The smell of fresh bread and seasoned beef hits you before you even sit down, setting the stage for a meal that’s equal parts comfort and indulgence.

One of the highlights here is the menu’s balance between hearty classics and easy-to-grab bites. Their cheesesteaks carry the kind of flavor you’d expect from a spot that’s been perfecting them for years, layered with tender steak, melted cheese, and just enough onions to add sweetness without overpowering. Subs range from Italian cold cuts stacked high to chicken variations that stay juicy and flavorful. And while the sandwiches often steal the show, the side items—like golden fries or onion rings—are worth the trip on their own. Guests often mention in reviews that portions are generous, making it a go-to for anyone hungry after a long day.

From an experience perspective, what sets this place apart is the consistency. I’ve stopped by during both quiet afternoons and busy weekends, and the food quality doesn’t dip. There’s also a sense of trust here; the kitchen feels transparent, the ingredients taste fresh, and everything is served with a straightforward honesty you don’t always find in bigger chain locations. According to data from the National Restaurant Association, nearly 60% of customers say consistency is their top factor in returning to a restaurant, and this diner nails that expectation.

Washington, DC’s food scene is crowded, yet Roy’s holds its own because of its authority in simple, no-nonsense meals done right. Food critics in local outlets often highlight spots like this as essential to preserving the city’s diner culture, and Roy’s keeps that reputation alive. Whether you’re looking at online reviews or just talking to neighbors in the area, there’s a consensus that it’s a reliable stop. It’s not about reinventing the wheel—it’s about doing steak and subs the way they’re meant to be, and doing it with care every single time.

Roys Steak & Subs is a mom & pop carry out with delicious food, I stopped in and grabbed a couple breakfast sandwiches and some wings. I noticed that most of the customers call orders in for pick up and the people that did come in were regulars. This establishment opens early so a lot of field workers stop here for breakfast. It’s definitely a classic greasy spoon spot but the community loves it. I got them saved to my phone now.

After living on this side of town for almost 1yr, today I've decided to step foot in this spot FOR THE FIRST TIME. My initial thoughts were not pleasant because the outside looks run down (it's the hood for you). But when I stepped inside and took my order it wasn't bad at all (just need a little renovation). Overall the food was good enough to eat again. My order was a bacon and egg sandwich with home fries and it wasn't what I expected, it exceeded my expectations. I guess you should never judge a book by its cover without doing my research!!!

Roy's is a neighborhood staple and Steve, the owner is great. The steak and cheese comes with a lot of toppings I wouldn't expect, but trust me, it works. If it wasn't for the very necessary bullet proof glass, I'd bump this place up to a 5-star rating.
